1.6.2006 - Eye On Gambling (EOG.com): Armageddon for U.S. Gamblers Is Approaching, Issue Is in Doubt, but Optimism Remains Intact

Several bills to crack down on Internet gambling are in various stages of passage in Washington. It behooves everyone who believes in the right of individuals to make their own lifestyle choices to become a grassroots champion on this issue. (PRWEB) June 1, 2006 -- Exposure of the Watergate coverup conspiracy that brought down a sitting U.S. president was spearheaded by two investigative reporters who wisely followed the advice of Deep Throat to "follow the money." That course of action is still valid to get at the bottom of many issues which are often clouded by misdirection, manipulation and mistruths. After years of clucking disapprovingly about Internet gaming, executives from bricks-and-mortar casinos are chirping a different tune. In the past, whenever the suits who run gaming entities would speak of online betting, it was to self-servingly point out that it was unlicensed, unregulated, and players were likely to get a raw deal. Now, after years of empirical observation -- which revealed just how lucrative online gaming could be -- the boys have decided that they want a piece of the action. Previously, there were occasional attempts to get their feet wet with various half-baked schemes to offer consumers online gambling, most of which featured faulty software, free prizes and playing for fun. But none paid off in the way that satisfied bean-counters who insisted on the effort getting a quid pro quo. To be fair, the American Gambling Association effected a neutral stance, because somewhere down the road they did see possibilities that might be exploited. Well, that day has arrived. Research results now prove dramatically what was suspected by the sharper minds running gaming corporations: namely, that there is a willing market of desirable customers with lots of discretionary income and an inclination to gamble. Results from a recent AGA survey blew away misperceptions that the proper word to precede the term gambler is "degenerate." The facts showed that those who embrace online gambling as part of their lifestyle are younger, more affluent and better educated than their counterparts who gamble at land-based casinos. The money to be made in this burgeoning, decade-old business is so appealing to the Captains of this Industry, that they resemble Scrooge McDuck, as he contemplates diving into his swimming pool full of U.S. dollars. The figures show that online gaming has exploded from a $3 billion handle in 2001 to $15 billion in 2005. Reportedly, up to 60 percent of revenue comes from U.S. bettors. Interestingly, many respondents to the survey also revealed that they were not aware that gambling online is considered illegal by the U.S. government. This relatively simplistic approach of prohibiting a lifestyle option that is reflective of what citizens of other developed countries indulge in routinely, is not only mind-bogglingly stupid, it is about as un-American a mindset as is possible. Fortunately, it is not a position that is unchallenged. The deputy Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly, Frank Catania, is sounding a warning. As the former director of New Jersey's Division of Gaming Enforcement, he is an authoritative voice worth listening to. "It's time Congress developed a consistent and sensible policy for Internet gambling," Catania urged, adding, "... consumers deserve diligent regulators who make sure operators are honest, games are fair, winning players are paid diligently ... and minors are prohibited from playing." Americans have made it clear that they wish to gamble on the Internet. The Justice Department's arbitrary, out-of-touch and Puritanical insistence on making criminals of Americans who are principals in online gambling companies is robbing U.S. entrepreneurs and corporations of participating in a once-in-a-lifetime investment opportunity. "As more and more countries move toward regulation ... the United States could be the last to cross the finish line, losing out on the economic benefits," of this industry, Catania asserts. It is obvious that the U.S. government is stuck in a time warp. In their ignorance of cyberspace, our so-called leaders are lagging behind their constituents. According to a just-released Harris interactive poll, there were 172 million Internet users in the U.S. in April 2005, and the number continues to grow. The poll estimates that 77 percent of U.S. adults are now online. As this issue gets more media coverage, and greater numbers of otherwise clueless voters become aware of how a blue-nosed minority is trying to shove their agenda on everyone else, reason has a better chance of prevailing. Several bills to crack down on Internet gambling are in various stages of passage in Washington. It behooves everyone who believes in the right of individuals to make their own lifestyle choices to become a grassroots champion on this issue. Use it or lose it is the operative phrase regarding freedom as well as any other important function. -- Buzz Daly For further information on this story or any other sports betting or casino opportunities, please visit Eye On Gambling (http://www.eog.com) and the EOG Forums (http://www.eog.com/forums/).
